Write a short (4 pages) paper that analyzes closely one or two primary sources in order to reveal what it can tell us about some aspect of the history and culture of the1960s. Submit both a hard copy and upload it to SafeAssign, available on the History 3135 page on BlackBoard.
Primary sources are documents created at or near the time of the event. For example, Rev. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham City Jail” is a primary source, while Taylor Branch’s history of the Civil Rights movement, Parting the Waters, is a secondary source.
Select one or two primary sources. You may use documents in Takin’ It to the Streets, or, if you are more ambitious, you may locate documents from newspapers, magazines, films, TV shows, works of art, and physical artifacts. The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and Life magazine are good sources on the events of that era.
Pay close attention to the source and to the author’s words or images analyze what it can tell us about the 1960s. Here are examples of topics you might pursue:
What do the Rev. Martin Luther King’s speeches and writings reveal about the moral
and political arguments advanced by the Civil Rights movement?
What does the film Dr. Strangelove reveal about attitudes toward the Cold War and
masculinity?
What do Sen. Barry Goldwater’s words reveal about the growing conservative pushback
against the political and cultural changes in the 1960s?
What do Andy Warhol’s pop art images reveal about mass culture or consumer culture? What do Timothy Leary’s speeches or writings about LSD reveal about the extravagant hopes that some young Americans attached to drugs?
What does NOW’s “Statement of Purpose” reveal about the goals and tactics of the
feminist movement?
