Scenario: I am a cancer survivor who went to nursing school after surviving cancer. Going through treatment I have witnessed good nursing care and substandard nursing care and how much of a difference to a patient it can make.
Code of Ethics means doing the right thing at all times.
Helping people motivates me to stay in the profession. One example is a female psychiatric patient who was very disorganized and suicidal, unable to do ADLs, and totally dependent on nursing for all aspects of her care. She was unable to feed herself, unable to change closes or use the restroom on her own. It took the treatment team 3 weeks to find out what medication works for her. After just a couple of days of being on the new medication, she started taking care of her own ADLs, a 360-degree turnaround. A different person emerged, normal, capable, energetic, and wity.
