COURSE DESCRIPTION
Music Appreciation is a survey course designed to familiarize students with the basic mediums and vocabulary of Western art and popular music. The course will present an overview of musical style periods and will include both instrumental and vocal genres.
The course will incorporate several modes of instruction including lecture, discussion, visual presentations and graded listening.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
The Enjoyment of Music, Forney and Machlis (Shorter Version), 12th Edition (W.W. Norton, 2007) W/TOTAL ACCESS STREAMING MUSIC (text is NOT required)
In lieu of purchasing a textbook for this course, students must attend FOUR (4) concerts approved by the Auburn University Music Department. The cost to attend these concerts is approximately $40 -$50 total

SLO and COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course fulfills requirements for the following general education goal and Student Learning Outcome (SLO):
General Education Goal #7: Aesthetic Appreciation and Engagement

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the common elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, texture, tempo, dynamics and form) and how they all interrelate in music (SLO11, measures 1 and 3)
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of music to the other arts (SLO 11, measures 2 and 3)
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of Western music from Gregorian chant to present day (SLO 11, measures 2 and 3)
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the wealth and variety of music from around the world and its impact on Western music (SLO 11, measure 2 and 3)
Students will demonstrate the ability to articulate aesthetic judgement (SLO 11, measure 1)

Concert attendance and written reports (see template for reports)
Written examinations (including listening component) on all tests
